Picked 4kg of rhubarb today & made a beautiful drink with star anise which I will mix with my next brew of kombucha. The size of these rhubarb stalks is just phenomenal - I've never seen anything like it. The drink is delicious & really easy to make too! Bonus all round @tuigardenandhome - - - - - #rhubarb#freefood
Since I've been growing my own vegetables, I have realised how DELICIOUS veggies like parsnips can be. They are very good for you too -i just wish I'd planted more of them. The carrots are pretty yummy too. 👍 . . . . . #freefood#growit
Oh my goodness those zucchinis just keep saying hello..Cut & bagged 2 kilos already. Did you know they freeze beautifully just cut like this? They free-flow perfectly & out they'll come in the winter for yummy stir-fries. - - - - - #freefood#growit
The very last of the stored pumpkins of the previous season. And the very 1st pumpkin picked this season. Big Fairfield Pumpkin (my own cross pollinated seed) and a tiny Jack be Little. . #pampoen#welovesquash
The view from our kitchen bench. Poppies, sweetpeas, tomatoes, parsnips, carrots, cauliflowers, beetroot, rhubarb, sunflowers, zucchini & a lime tree all growing well in 5m x5m space. Just goes to show you don't need a big area to grow lots of yummy food & help the bees as well.😊🐝🥀 - - -z #freefood#growit poppies
This is my first ever smoothie attempt. I've just been diagnosed with high cholesterol, Doc & I thought I could get it down myself as this is my only classic heart attack precursor. So more vegies, fewer eggs, cheese, etc. The recipe said spinach but I used silverbeet cos that's in the garden, & an orange but i only had a grapefruit! So there a bit of tweaking to do to get it looking like a smoothie & not pooz. Doc's given me 6 months & then we'll reassess. Smoothie recipes, anyone? - - - - - - #freefood ...
Lots of lovely things for dinner from my garden. The tomatoes are ripening up really well - most of these are from the greenhouse but the outside ones are catching up. What makes me really happy is the fact that there is no plastic, no transport miles, no spray & I grew it all! . . . . . #dinner#harvest
It's really worth all the pain & hard work of thinning & I am also now a believer of subsequent plantings to avoid a glut. Here is the result of an earlier planting, & thinnings from a subsequent planting. I'm so rapt with these carrots! I know they are cheap, but these are SO carroty, sweet & delicious. - - - - - - - #freefood#growit
I'm not the most imaginative cook, having been brought up on meat & three veg. But a post by my niece @healthy_chik really caught my eye, & was totally up my alley towards where we are going with our food. Lots of veg, less meat, and lots of colour. So @marvellousmargot, @michaeljvdw & I got together & we created a feast tonight. I loved having lots of the food homegrown, and was my first foray into tofu! . . . . . . . #freefood#growit ...
The gooseberry bush was absolutely laden, so I braved the sharp spikes & picked them all. I didn't really know much about them but must have doen all the right things because the bush has flourished. I will freeze them & make them into yummy winter goodies. . . . . . . . #freefood#growit
Produce from the garden today! Sugar snap peas, raspberries, gooseberries and tomatoes. Everything except our strawberries have done well this season, & I have been talking to other Chch gardeners who have also had a bad year with strawbs due to the amount of rain & little sunshine hours. How have your gardens been? . . . . . . #freefood#growit
Santa Claus Melon! This melon started as a mere sprout in my apt in Long Beach, CA last winter, made it outside to grow well in the sunshine, only to be found yummy by my garden opossum while I was admitted in the hospital! But! I shared my little plants with a neighbor gardener, and her garden not attacked, grew well! Before I moved, she gave me this melon from the plant that grew. Which was just a beautiful sign of friendship between gardeners. Santa Claus Melons are an old variety, that are picked in late summer and ripen slowly ...
Rhubarb as big as gunnera! This is a type we grew from seed - it's called Victoria. It's not as pretty as the red variety bit it's really prolific & tastes great with maple syrup. I'm going to make this into a cordial with star anise to mix with my kombucha. The huge leaves make awesome mulch - - -. . . . . #freefood#growit homegrown
Christmas kombucha - trying to keep up with demand! It's so popular and I LOVE offering it to people when they drop in. This batch is blueberry, raspberry and a feijoa cordial I made last year. The blueberry is my current fave and is usually the first to go. MERRY CHRISTMAS - have a wonderful day 🍇🍷🎶 - - - - - #freefood#growit
Made the most delicious focaccia bread today! The house smells so good. It was so big in the bread maker it pushed the lid up. We are having some friends over tonight ... hope there's some left for them haha ☺ - - - - - - #freefood#growit
Third bucketful this week! No worms either. I think the key here is that we put rhubarb leaves down as mulch in the winter & spring so the beetles can't climb up the stalks to lay their eggs in the flowers. The rhubarb leaves a totally kill the beetles! We've been freezing a lot & giving some away. They are delicious! - - - - - - #freefood#growit
Hmmm didn’t mean to colour coordinate my companion plants but I might do it on purpose next time - I kind of like it. The nasturtiums should help keep pests away from the zucchini and bring in extra #bees to help pollinate.
Looks like it'll be cauliflower for dinner tonight, tomorrow & the next night!! I made cauliflower rice & had it under baked salmon which was delicious! Such a versatile vegetable & very expensive in the shops! - - - - - #freefood#growit
The gooseberries are ripening up - when they are ripe they are a bit squishy & quite sweet. I'm going to freeze these ones & make a tart when I have enough. The Bush is a beast with gnarly prickles but they are worth all the pain! - - - - - #freefood#growit
So exciting!! It happens every year but every year it never loses its excitement THE FIRST TOMATOES!! They are so cute & perfect & sweet. Nothing like the ones in the shops. Get that down ya!! - - - - - #freefood#growit
Yay, corn!! - Started these babies off in the greenhouse & they're lovin' their new home outside. If only the rhubarb would stick to its own corner of the garden! It's gone mad! - - - - #freefood#growit
Nothing like getting home from work & having a walk around to see what needs picking! Here we have rhubarb, strawbs, raspberries, 2 broccolis, a brocoflower & some silverbeet!! So exciting Nearly holidays. Can't wait. - - - - #freefood#growit
Christmas = shortbread no doubt about it. So good! I know it's treat food, & so it's ok every now & then. This batch is for my sister-in-law who is just out of hospital. The perfect get better soon present 💕😁 - - - - - - #freefood#growit
We had some pine needles left over from the latest coop clean out so we put them to good use as mulch in the strawberry bed. Apparently they add acidity (which strawberries love) to the soil as they decompose. They might also keep away the annoying little bugs that eat the berries as the sit on the ground!
One more raspberry pic! Just picked these. We've had 4 days of drizzle & rain so I haven't done a lot of picking. Today the sun is out & this is the result. So stoked. Completely worm-free & no sprays in sight. The rhubarb leaf mulch/worm deterrent must have worked! - - - - #freefood#growit
Good morning! How do you start you day? Blueberry kombucha can't really be beaten. This is a 2 week first ferment & a week 2nd. I think it's taking longer due to the cold weather, but it's worth waiting for Z - - - #freefood#growit
Just popping out to put the washing out! Yeah right! And pick some rhubarb, silver beet, & Oh! There's another purple cauliflower, & put bird netting on the raspberries! Half an hour later ... (day in the life of a gardener!) - - - - #freefood#growit
Beetroot is usually a bit of a fail for me, but I've managed to grow some tiddly ones this season which is better than something the size of a worm on the end of luscious greenery. I'm still at a loss as to why they aren't as big as bowling balls but I'll keep trying! Any hints? - - - - - - #freefood#growit
Another beautiful purple broccoli from my garden. They actually turn green when you cook them which is amazing. I've never seen them in the shops, so to me they are quite special - - - - - #freefood#growit
The only part of gardening that makes me sad 😣. Carrots need thinning or they end up wonky and no one wants wonky carrots. I munched on these wee gifts though & they didn't go to waste 😁 - - - - #freefood#growit
This little guy was due to emerge any day now (14th day in the #chrysalis today) Temperatures are dropping below freezing here tonight, so bringing my friend inside. Get cozy, hold tight. 💕🐛💕 . #monarchchrysalis
#repost @littlegardenintexas is hosting monarchs in Texas. 🌎Tag us with your location. #monarch_hosts _____________ Original post 💕🐛💕Just spotted this lil' straggler in the garden pretty late into the season. May the odds be in your favor, buddy. 🙏🏾🐛🌺🦋💕
We can't get enough rhubarb! So good in cobbler, stewed for breakfast, and it makes a delicious cordial which I use in my kombucha 2nd ferment. It's also full of goodness & its leaves make a very powerful insecticide! - - - - - - - #freefood#growit
So close!!! Very busy with bees so we'll hold off with the netting just yet but it's not going to be long! To stop the little raspberry worm I put rhubarb leaves around the base just prior to flowering as that when the beetle emerges from the soil & lays its eggs in the flower. Fingers crossed! - - - - - #freefood#growit
First tomato of the season is always a special occasion. Welcoming in the first of anything never fails to excite me and lose its joy, it's a hard first between tomatoes and strawberries. What's your fave fruit or veg to welcome? - - - - - #freefood#growit
We included a variety of #salvias to our garden early this spring, and so happy with the results. They've really taken off nicely becoming lush and unique flowery bushes that have invited so much life to the garden. 🐝😍💕🦋 . #thisiswhyigarden
Throwing it BACK to “The Patch” @anth.pacheco . 🌱🌞🌻 Tearing out a patch of sod and cultivating a garden. 📚🗓📝🧐 Letting Seminole Pumpkin vines take over. Introducing flowers and THEN, came the pollinators. 🦋 Reviving what was left after a monster hurricane. #humblebegginings Thank you 🙏🏼 #endlesslessons Pure magic
I'm holding off planting my tomatoes outside just yet, but they are bursting out of their pots and rearing to go! We managed 13 degrees yesterday & today it got to 36 in the Green house, so the weather is all over the place. Right now there's a gale force NWer so I'm not taking any chances. I have grown lots for friends so I'm keeping them safe inside for another week at least - - - - #freefood#growit ...
Keep off slugs & birds! These work a treat to give my precious beetroot seedlings a chance. I lost 9 out of 14 capsicum seedlings to a cheeky sparrow inside the greenhouse so now I have a netting door but these cut off PET bottles scored from my neighbours are brilliant for outside. 😁 - - - - - #freefood#growit
You can't have too many pumpkins, right? We are down to our last one from last season - they seemed to store really well this year. I washed them, wiped them with bleach and stored them on thick cardboard in the garage. Two out of 12 went mouldy, but we managed to use them before they completely perished. How do you store your pumpkins successfully? - - - #freefood#growit
This tiny brocollini head has been hiding inside these MASSIVE leaves all winter. (Slide to next pic) We kept going out to see what the plant was going to produce, & then while we were away this head emerged. It's so precious. They really do say 'hello! Here I am!' - - - - - #freefood#growit
The hobbit is ready for fall! Never mind that he can’t open his door because of the pumpkins. I especially love the cascade of orange mums against the purple plumes of the Muhley grass. #hobbithouse#fallgarden

We've been away for a few days and altho it's great to get away, I love coming home to my garden. This is a lemon tree we bought two years ago that was a spindly sick little 'second' that was due to be tossed out. It's doing so well with love & worm tea, I can't believe how many buds it's got! - - - - - - #freefood#growit
