Did you know that you can top & tail feijoas & freeze them whole? Whenever you want that gorgeous taste of Autumn you can take out what you need, thaw & it's as good as it would be if it was picked fresh from the tree. #tuiautumnsnaps - - Z - #freefood
Pumpkin harvest time! 9 good sized beauties & one tiny one that was hiding. We love pumpkin all through the year & I've found that they store really well in our garage. Towards the end of the Summer some start to go off & we just cut them up, roast & freeze. How do you store your pumpkins? . . . . . #freefood#growit
🌿Today’s Harvest🌿 🍀Parsley🍀 We try to grow what we love and we LOVE parsley on everything we eat here on the farm—🥙,🍳, 🥗, 🍅 Plus, Lulu 🐇 likes it too! If you haven’t tried gardening, and want a place to start, I suggest herbs. Parsley, basil, thyme, oregano, chives, dill, chervil, mint, lemon verbena, sage, lemongrass, cilantro, chamomile, and thyme are easy to grow. Even just a small pot—set in a ☀️ corner, when you stick your finger in and it is dry, 🚿 your plant! If you garden, what are a few of your favorite must grow herbs? ...
Clearing out the last of the veggies, thinking there won't be much left, & finding a beautiful bounty like this makes me so happy. We have two types of cauliflower, beetroot, carrots & tomatoes. Most of it will be used in a roast veggie salad with a sprinkling of feta. Bon appetit! . . . . . . . #freefood#growit
🌿 Today’s harvest 🌿 My first time growing Brussels sprouts!! Some stalks grew much bigger Brussels than others. I snapped the tops when they started to bolt, and that was about it. Should I have trimmed the leaves as the heads developed? Any tips? 💚 💚 💚 . . . . #todaysharvest#brusselssprouts
A big fat juicy heritage. These monsters are the best for making passata. I'm going to plant heaps more next year & not so many cherries. Money-maker is also a fantastic cropper. -. . . . . . #freefood#growit
I think 43 may be an outdated number but you get the point...No wonder I can eat a huge salad when I’m out(it’s not nutrient dense)...but when I’m eating freshly harvested greens from my Tower Garden (rich in nutrients) I get full faster🤔Because I cant possiby eat from my towers all day everyday I bridge gaps with my Fruits veggie and berries concentrate capsules https://goo.gl/jc6wnn #thisiswhyigarden#crazyplantlady
A self-seeded tomato which grew in my garden. I have no idea of the variety & I didn't plant an orange one last year, so where did it come from? It's a type of Romano I think, quite fleshy & great in a curry. Nom nom. . . . . . #freefood#growit

It's been an emotional week, and I have found solace in my garden and kitchen in between working and caring for my wee Dooby (who is on the mend). The tomatoes have been prolific, so I've made a heap of passata with all home-grown ingredients: basil, onions & garlic. To play it safe, they've been water-bathed for 40 minutes to avoid botulism. How are your harvests going? . . . . . . #freefood#growit ...
Grrr - a cheeky slug burrowed into my capsicum, & made its home inside. Warm, sheltered & food on tap, why wouldn't you? I've had to resort to slug bait as my capsicums are precious & where these thieves have munched turns the insides of the capsicums black. Never seen this before 😖 - - - - - - - #freefood#growit
🌿 Today’s harvest 🌿Lots of purple broccoli, a few broccoli leaves, kale and peppermint Swiss chard. Hope everyone is having a great Monday! What are you harvesting from your garden today? . . . . #todaysharvest#basketofjoy
Still picking so many tomatoes, beans & zuccs. Yesterday I took a heap of them to the local neighbourhood pantry, & picked even more today. Also found some huge cucumbers which I'd forgotten about underneath the pumpkins, & the peppers have turned a beautiful shade of orange. The pears are a bit pocky (they have a disease called black pit) but they are ok for bottling. Always happy to have lemons. - - - - - #freefood#growit ...
This is my first ever crop of onions. They were seedlings from @awapuni nursery, whose seedlings are always successful. Although it said 10 seedlings, there were 24! I gave some away as I didnt have any more room. So pleased. All 12 of mine came up. . . . . . . #freefood#growit
Fantastic crop of capsicums this year! I'm so stoked. I have sliced & frozen them for stir fries etc - the bushes are so tiny it's hard to believe they can produce such big fruit 😊. . . . . . #freefood#growit
Luisa plums. If you haven't tried them you haven't lived. Totally for real. They are a cross between a mango & a plum. You have to eat them over the sink cos they are so juicy. They are the BEST. We have a tree 💖💖💖💖 , , , , , , #freefood#growit
Tomatoes are coming thick & fast. I'm freezing them all this year as I can't keep up with making sauce & paste at the moment. The cherry toms make the sweetest paste. What is your favourite tomato for making into paste? - - - - Z #freefood#growit
I picked a big bunch of basil, added bit of grated parmesan, some hazel nuts & a drizzle of rice bran oil & made 4 pots of beautiful pesto. Love knowing what's in the food I'm eating, & although this won't keep as well as bought stuff (no preservative) it's fine to freeze until we need it. - - - - - #freefood#growit
Camping in style with our blueberry booch. We love our kombucha so much I made extra to take away with us so we can still have a bottle a day. Just hitting the road for a few days to finally check out the new highway north through Kaikoura to Blenheim. Cheers! - - - - - - #freefood#growit
A bucketful of sunshine. Delicious cherry tomatoes are loving it in the greenhouse. The outside ones are a little bit slower to ripen & hopefully they will redden up before it starts to turn cold - Z - - - - #freefood#growit
I was having trouble with blossom end rot with my zucchinis, & no matter what I did, they kept growing these rotten noses. I read somewhere to mix Epsom salts & milk powder with a bucket of water & pour that on the base of the plant. Well here is the difference. Same plant after 2 weeks. They are all growing properly now. Btw I used @tuigardenandhome Epsom salts - so thanks Tui #tuisummersnaps - - - - - - #freefood ...
I get pretty excited about my produce & the dogs get excited when I'm excited. Apparently it's poisonous for dogs so we just have to sing the corn song to make up for them not eating it. Hope you like our corn song too. Tap for the song! (We're a bit crazy around here) - - - - - #freefood#growit
My garden is my therapy. There are some people in the world that set out to upset you, & this is when I am so glad I garden. I can forget them for a few hours while I prune, weed, plant, sow and harvest, and it makes me feel that nothing can bring me down. Look at all this beauty! How can I be anything else other than joyful when I look at this? Z - Z - #freefood#growit ...
Homegrown & second to none. Sweet, juicy & perfect. Takes me back to my childhood when my father grew the most exquisite corn. All 7 of us would have 1 each, what seemed like weeks! Have to credit having marigolds all through my vegetable garden bringing in the bees, my beautiful compost (hubby), & my worm weez. - (tap for sound) - - - - - #freefood#growit
We had dessert tonight which is a rare treat. I made Chelsea Winter's chocolate cake (no eggs, butter or milk) & froze it in pieces. Tonight I added raspberry coulis made with our own raspberries & yoghurt. I had a pooz of a day after admitting Mum to hospital with a stroke, & then trying to get home on a Lime scooter which wouldn't go. I'd gone with her in the ambulance so had no way of getting home. Had to catch a bus in the end. So cake made me feel better. - - - - - - ...
Everything on this plate was grown in my garden (except the fish 😊). Corn, zucchini, tomatoes, garlic, pumpkin, & beans. Quite pleased with my corn as I thought it was a bit small & all the tops had been broken over so I was worried about fertilization. But it seems that all was well. Saving so much $, no transport miles & organic. Why wouldn't you? - - - - - #freefood#growit
These are amazing Luisa plums. They are so delicious & taste like a cross between a mango & a plum. The juice literally runs down your chin when you bite into it. We've had this tree for 3 seasons & its finally produced fruit! It's a bit of a race with the birds though, as we thought we had it all netted up & this morning I found 2 thrushes in there having a feast! - - - - Z #freefood#growit ...
Pumpkins are doing really well! This one has begun growing really close to where it has sprouted & it looks like it might grow upside down as there isn't enough vine to turn it over. I've slipped a wee piece of wood underneath it so it isn't sitting on the ground. We just used our last pumpkin from last season, so it's perfectly timed. - - - - - #freefood#growit
More carrot porn Haha!! Beautiful Yates Egmont Gold carrots. I am so excited right now. This carrot is PERFECT for our so-called carrot unfriendly Canterbury soil. They are sweet & juicy & keep well in the chiller. I water my garden every 3 days, & have a thick layer of peastraw mulch around everything I grow. I'm plagued with oxalis, but ripping out the leaves seems to keep it down as I can't be digging out the bulbs around the plants. What do you do with oxalis? - @yatesgardening - - #freefood#growit ...
Picked today - Beans, tomatoes, zucchinis, cucumbers & basil. The beans are amazing - this is about a quarter of what I picked. I'll be blanching & freezing them in portion sizes. The tomatoes can be frozen as is, the zucchinis are either grated or sliced before freezing. No need to blanch those babies. I'm going to make a delicious basil pesto with oil, hazel nuts & parmesan. 😊 What have you harvested today? - - Z - Z #freefood#growit ...
Picked 4kg of rhubarb today & made a beautiful drink with star anise which I will mix with my next brew of kombucha. The size of these rhubarb stalks is just phenomenal - I've never seen anything like it. The drink is delicious & really easy to make too! Bonus all round @tuigardenandhome - - - - - #rhubarb#freefood
It's pickling time I keep discovering hidden cucumbers that are absolutely huge! They aren't as good huge as when they are little, but when full of vinegar sugar and spices I am sure they will be awesome #cucumbers#pickles
Since I've been growing my own vegetables, I have realised how DELICIOUS veggies like parsnips can be. They are very good for you too -i just wish I'd planted more of them. The carrots are pretty yummy too. 👍 . . . . . #freefood#growit
Oh my goodness those zucchinis just keep saying hello..Cut & bagged 2 kilos already. Did you know they freeze beautifully just cut like this? They free-flow perfectly & out they'll come in the winter for yummy stir-fries. - - - - - #freefood#growit
Busy busy in the greenhouse 😊. The first capsicum is loving the heat, cucumber & sugarsnap peas are putting on weight, & tomatoes have grown up to the roof. Picking yummy stuff everyday makes me so happy - - - - #freefood#growit
The very last of the stored pumpkins of the previous season. And the very 1st pumpkin picked this season. Big Fairfield Pumpkin (my own cross pollinated seed) and a tiny Jack be Little. . #pampoen#welovesquash
The view from our kitchen bench. Poppies, sweetpeas, tomatoes, parsnips, carrots, cauliflowers, beetroot, rhubarb, sunflowers, zucchini & a lime tree all growing well in 5m x5m space. Just goes to show you don't need a big area to grow lots of yummy food & help the bees as well.😊🐝🥀 - - -z #freefood#growit poppies
This is my first ever smoothie attempt. I've just been diagnosed with high cholesterol, Doc & I thought I could get it down myself as this is my only classic heart attack precursor. So more vegies, fewer eggs, cheese, etc. The recipe said spinach but I used silverbeet cos that's in the garden, & an orange but i only had a grapefruit! So there a bit of tweaking to do to get it looking like a smoothie & not pooz. Doc's given me 6 months & then we'll reassess. Smoothie recipes, anyone? - - - - - - #freefood ...
The sweetpeas just keep on giving & the colours are just amazing. Some were self-seeded & some newly planted in Autumn. So easy to grow too & very bee-friendly @tuigardenandhome @drkeithhammett . . . . . . . . #freefood#growit
7 pumpkins in the growing I was so excited to return home after two weeks away to find 6 new beauties out the back and another butternut out the front with my first. That makes 9 pumpkins in the growing. That's a lot of pumpkin #pumpkin#ilovepumpkin
Well I did it. I cracked my little mate..but I did so a little two early. I reckon if I left it another 2 weeks it would have had more flavour. Just to clarify... It was stil very tasty and my girls are it and said how yummy it was (cuties) ..... .... ... .. . #pumpkins#instagarden
