Yellow tiger longwing butterfly at the Cockrell Butterfly Center in Houston. One of only a handful of photos that turned out okay from that day due to the very low light environment and little guys moving so fast! #cockrellbutterflycenter#houston

#butterflyoftheday Hamadryas laodamia, the appropriately named: starry night cracker. Males in this genus make a "cracking" noise (similar to crackling bacon) with their wings, but this species is one of few that cannot. What it lacks in sound, it makes up for in sheer beauty!
It's National Learn About Butterflies Day! This is Tithorea harmonia (Harmonia tiger-wing). Their native range is from South America to Mexico. They have a bright coloration known as the "tiger complex". They share this pattern with over 200 species of Neotropical butterflies! This is known as Müllerian mimicry which basically means that sharing a common pattern across species reinforces their toxicity to predators.
This little guy is a Triodes Rhadamantus or “Golden birdwing” they are native to the Philippines. This was a really fun and easy bug to capture on my camera, pretty much just landed in front of me and posed. 🦋📸 @cockrellbutterflycenter @hmns
Some planet and butterfly fun at the Houston Museum of Natural Science yesterday. And more family/bestie time because that’s what spring break is all about! 🌎🦋😍 @mrsrgarza @hmns #springbreak2019#burkebakerplanetarium
This is a “Rice Paper” butterfly. They are native to South east Asia in the Philippines. What makes this butterfly so interesting, is that when it’s in it’s larva stage it often eats a plant that has a milky latex sap which contains a toxin called cardenolides. The larva that eats these plants often retain these toxins into adulthood, which in turn can make them unpalatable to predators. Their wing color and pattern advertise their toxicities to other predators, which is why this one looks so cool! @cockrellbutterflycenter @hmns
Another beauty from the @cockrellbutterflycenter chrysalis room. This is a female Malay Cruiser, Vindula Dejone, from Malaysia. They are sexually dimorphic - the males are a stunning rust orange color but the same size and shape. I have never seen one of these before, they’re gorgeous! #latergram#volunteer @hmns
I’m always in awe of the amazing species I get to see in the chrysalis room at @cockrellbutterflycenter! This one-spotted prepona has definitely become a favorite of mine. They are quick flyers that hide a flash of stunning black and blue on the not-often-seen dorsal view of their wings. #onespottedprepona#volunteer @hmns

Flowers at the Cockrell Butterfly Conservatory in Houston, Texas. Love how the flowers pop against the green leaves. The water droplets enhance the texture of the petals, adding a little depth to the scene. #flowers#flowersofinstagram
First time shooting in a butterfly pavilion thanks to the upcoming phenom fashion photographer @johnniesommer 🙏🦋 Thank you for not only seeing my vision, but helping me bring it into fruition 💛 eager to show y'all what we've created! Swipe to check out his rad neck/head tat 😍
Stunning swallowtails in the chrysalis room today at @cockrellbutterflycenter! In order: Emerald Swallowtail, Cattleheart Swallowtail, and Thoas Swallowtail. #emeraldswallowtail#cattleheartbutterfly @hmns
* I’m excited to share my new #bizcards#businesscards and design with you! 🎨 * ❓Which do you prefer - color or b&w? 🥇🥈 * 💭Behind the design: 💭 I chose one of my favorite from the @cockrellbutterflycenter in for the background image. * * Then I created the box grid for my brand. I couldn’t decide if I liked the print better in or so I created both. This meant completing the full process twice. I printed the biz cards via @Canva and the stickers via ...
I know some of you are probably sick of my pics at school / uni 😅 Let's move on to museums. The Cockrell Butterfly Center at the Houston Museum of Natural Science is a stunning, living exhibit that shows hundreds of live butterflies in a naturalistic rainforest setting. If I had a possibility - I'd spend the whole day in this beautiful place 😍 They even have cacoons, small houses of new beautiful butterflies 🦋 . . . #usa#america
The paper kite butterfly, Idea leuconoe; an Asian native found in Taiwan, China, Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore. Taken at the magical place that is the Cockrell Butterfly Center. . . . . #idealeuconoe#idea
How flipping cute is this balloon caterpillar?! 🐛😍 This pic does not do it justice!! 😍 Met a super sweet volunteer named Jay who was also helping out yesterday and he has MAD balloon art skillz! He made this as a decoration for the “adopt a butterfly” table....and then he let me have it once we were done! It’s chilling out on my mantle now, but I think I need to find a spot for it in my butterfly rearing area ❤️ #balloonart#madskillz @hmns @cockrellbutterflycenter
Also took a spin through the butterfly center and got to help release tons of gorgeous butterflies. Finally saw a “Forest Queen” in person too, swoon! I love their polka dot legs! I also held one of my favorite species for the first time - an emerald swallowtail. This was such a fun event to help with! It was well put together and everyone seemed to have a great time.🦋 #beavolunteer#hmns @hmns @cockrellbutterflycenter
Yesterday I volunteered at a super fun event at @hmns / @cockrellbutterflycenter called “A Butterfly Flutter.” Tons of arts and crafts along with snacks and fun activities for families. One of those events was cockroach painting! During set up I saw the sign and chucked a little - kids painting pics of cockroaches, right? I mean, it was next to the butterfly marbling craft and THAT didn’t involve any actual butterflies....So, imagine my surprise when they wheeled out a tank of Madagascar hissing cockroaches! 😱 Meet Carl - he and I worked together to make this fancy piece of art ...
Today's #butterflyoftheday is brought to you by Olivia! This tenacious young bug lover came to visit at the @cockrellbutterflycenter @hmns! She loved petting all the bugs and even helped release this blue morpho butterfly (Morpho achilles) into the conservatory! #girlpower
Took my son to his first trip to the Houston Museum of Natural Science and he LOVED the dinosaurs and the butterfly exhibit. In the video he's pretending he's a dinosaur and stomping around with all the other dinos! #hmns#dinosaurs
