Another metal favorite for 2018, Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean’s I Carry My Awareness of Defeat Like a Banner of Victory. Excellent doom metal and look at how gorgeous this picture disc is. I want to frame it! #metal#doom
I still haven’t even finished posting all of my favorite metal records of 2018–there were a lot of them! And there were a lot of great records from either all female bands or female fronted bands. Good metal is good metal, period—but representation is so important. I’m thrilled to see the boys club that used to be the metal scene turning into something more and more inclusive every year. I love seeing young girls and women writing, playing and loving heavy metal. Burning Witches “Hexenhammer” brings the old school, kick ass Ronnie James Dio realness. Great musicianship and it just ...

I haven’t done a Work From Home Wednesday post in awhile, so here’s the new record by Jarboe: Cut of the Warrior (2018). I’ve been eagerly awaiting this—so beautiful. A limited edition with only 100 copies pressed and featuring mixes/collaborations with members of Brutal Truth and Gorguts. #vinyl#vinylcollection
Chino has been standing there staring at me like this for like five minutes. I taught him how to “meerkat” on command and now he randomly does it all of the time when he wants treats 🤦🏻♀️ #teamweirdo#chiweenie
Another one of my favorite 2018 metal releases—Conan’s Existential Void Guardian. A little stoner doom sludge is just what the doctor ordered. Playing the “is it a cold, cedar fever or both?” game. 🔮I’m having a super fun time with asthma this week. #metal#doom
Another one of my favorite metal records of 2018: Behemoth, “I Loved You At Your Darkest”. I discovered this morning that if I put on Behemoth, my physical therapy changes from boring exercises to an actual workout 🤘🏽💪🏽 As an ex-Catholic heathen, I truly appreciate the blasphemous glory of this record. There’s a beautiful insert with pictures of the band staged as classical paintings. I especially loved Judith and Holofernes (surprise). @behemothofficial #behemoth#metal

Happy birthday, Ozzy! You were my first true metal love and my gateway drug into the magical world of heavy metal. The first metal record I bought as a nerdy Catholic school girl was Blizzard of Ozz. I got to wait on Ozzy when I worked for Whole Foods Market in the 90s in Austin. I was so excited that I almost lost my shit. He ordered lentils and a bunch of other vegan food. #ozzyosbourne#ozzy ♐️🤘🏽

I thought I was going to go back to work this week, but I’m having issues with my incision and I’m having to go to a wound care specialist. To distract myself from both boredom and worry, I’m going to think happy thoughts about my favorite metal records of 2018. Tribulation, “Down Below”. The more I listened to this, the more it grew on me. Death metal goth 🤘🏽I also really love Jonathan Hultén’s solo récord from 2017, too. If you haven’t heard it yet, definitely check it out. So bummed I missed them when they played here. @tribulation_official #heavymetal ...

Apparently Lucha thinks my new faux fur blanket that I got to snuggle in post-surgery is, in fact, *her* new blanket. I give up. #chihuahua#chistagram 👑

This is all that is going on at my casa lately...so many ice packs, binge watching Todd and the Book of Pure Evil and small dog snuggling. Week 2 since my 2nd hip replacement. This is my 5th surgery that I’ve had since getting sober. I would reallllly like to not have any more of them. Being patient while recovering is not my strong suit. Trying to remember one day at a time, progress over perfection and being gentle with myself. But on a positive note, thanks to my two new hips I am now more metal than ever 🤘🏽 ...
Whenever I find myself getting angry about something lately, I’m trying to practice pausing and engaging my curiosity rather than my rage. If I ask questions and stay curious, I can work toward a solution and remain present. Dealing with anger can be tricky for me in recovery. Suppressing it and denying it doesn’t work. Acknowledging it, pausing, and then asking some questions usually works a hell of a lot better. Luckily, life seems to give me *lots* of opportunities to practice! 😉 #recovery#sober
How cool is this? If you’re in recovery in Austin or just would like to go to a fun Halloween event with no alcohol, this is happening on Friday. #sober#halloween @sans_bar

31 Days of Horror, Day 9: Dario Argento’s Inferno (1980). The second part of his Three Mothers trilogy that includes Suspiria, one of my favorite movies of all time. Beautiful poster by Italian art collective, Malleus. #31daysofhorror#horror
