We often find this beautiful Nile monitor basking in the afternoon sun. They are NOT venomous! They are ferocious predators and large specimens reach legthns of 220cm. They are quick to slip into the closest water hole if disturbed. They will attempt to bite , scratch and whip their tales if you handle them and this should be avoided and left to permitted trained animal rescuers. I love the mottled markings which help camouflage this individual. #rangerryan#reptiles
Record shot of a Greater Painted Snipe. This bird is an uncommon resident in Gauteng. Uncharacteristically, the female of this species (pictured here) is more strikingly marked than her male counterpart. Isn't she beautiful? #rietvleinaturereserve#featherperfection
The Crowned Lapwing (Vanellus coronatus), or crowned plover, is a common but pretty little bird full of character. Amazing how it has the ability to make even the smallest islands of grass in the middle of roads and highways its home. It's intelligent , street wise and realises that predators don't fancy all that traffic. 80 to 90 % of its diet consists of ants and termites. They can be bold and have been known to chase elephants away from nest sights . #nature#bushbaby
An African Pied Starling (Lamprotornis bicolor) Endemic to South Africa . Enjoys grassland and thornveld and is often associated with farm animals. He was perched infront of us and very vocal, he didn't take much notice of us at all. No zoom required . #rangerryan#wildlifephotography Thank you @angelique0allison for another great experience.
